The Best Wine Farm Destinations at The Cape

The ultimate day trip to the country.

Social-distancing has become a necessity. More people are looking for outdoor entertainment options that allow them to entertain in large spaces. We live in an area that is bordered not only by one but five viticultural areas - all within an hour's drive of the city centre - which offers hundreds of wineries, wide-open spaces and world-class wines, as well as excellent local cuisine.

We searched for the best wine farms, from Stellenbosch to Paarl to Franschhoek, to Durbanville to Constantia. These places offer more than just food and wine. They also have a variety of sensory delights such as hotels, spas and boutiques, outdoor adventures, and a safe, immersive area for children where they can play while the grown-ups do the important business of drinking wine.

Babylonstoren

This 200-hectare Drakenstein Valley farm, which dates back to 1692, is located halfway between Franschhoek, Paarl. It was owned by Karen Roos, a former magazine editor who has created the ultimate destination. There are many sensory delights to be had, but the real luxury lies in the authenticity and integrity of the setting.

  • Food There are many options for food: The Greenhouse casual restaurant, The Bakery, where you can enjoy pizza evenings, and the more formal Babel.
  • Wine tasting is located next to the vintage wine cellar. Here, oenophiles can relax, enjoy a few bottles of Babylonstoren wine, and sit back.
  • Children's facilities The entire farm can be used as a playground for children. There are many attractions, including a porcupine, never ending gardens, water features, and ice cream trucks.
  • Shops at The Babylonstoren Farm Shop stock freshly baked bread and a variety of cheeses, biltong, and charcuterie. While the Lekker Room adjacent is full of sweet treats, nuts, and chocolates, the Lekker Room has a wide selection. The Scented Room is stocked with bath products, soaps, and candles.
  • You can also visit the Garden Spa, The Spice Garden and The Healing Garden. There are also The Juicery and Tea Ceremony.
  • Stay The hotel at Babylonstoren is a luxurious yet simple option for those who want to spend the night in this garden paradise.

Boschendal

Boschendal is one of the most admired wine farms in Western Cape for its unspoiled beauty. It boasts ancient oaks, beautiful, unmanaged gardens, and foresty expanses. The estate dates back to 1685 and is well-preserved. This is evident in the many antiques and artifacts displayed in the Manor House.

  • Food Visit The Werf to enjoy a casual, farm-totable meal with stunning views of the enormous herb and vegetable garden. You can also order sandwiches and burgers from the Deli, or book a picnic in the Rhone Rose Garden.
  • Wine tasting Under the oats, The Cellar Door is open weekends and holidays for wine tasting - you can order a charcuterieboard to go with your wine. You can also try choc-and wine pairings.
  • Children's facilities For children aged 5-14 years, the Tree House is a safe and enclosed playground with a pump track. Professional guides facilitate the Outdoor Experience Program, which offers a wide range of educational and fun activities for children.
  • Shops The renovated Farm Shop and Butchery are packed with fresh baked goods, preserves and condiments as well as a wide selection of bespoke homeware.
  • Things to Do Outdoor enthusiasts can take part in five mountain-biking trails or farm hikes, or book a horse-riding adventure.
  • Stay There are many luxury accommodations available at Boschendal. These include self-catering cottages and luxury tents.
